Dr. Sanjeev Varghese, fondly known as “Sanju Baba,” is a trailblazing public figure, fashion icon, and goodwill ambassador. A Unique Journey Begins
Born as a Syrian-Orthodox Christian in India, Dr. Varghese grew up dreaming of a career in fashion. However, his religious and cultural environment viewed fashion as taboo, forcing him to suppress his aspirations. Despite his humble beginnings and financial constraints, he pursued a career in healthcare, eventually moving to Manchester, United Kingdom, to work under the Ministry of Health.
It was here, in the vibrant and diverse communities of Manchester, that Dr. Varghese’s passion for fashion was reignited. Inspired by the elegance and style of African-descended residents attending church, he began crafting his own fashion identity. Yet, his journey was fraught with challenges. Discrimination, workplace harassment, and personal tragedies tested his resilience. At his lowest point, facing the loss of his business, marriage, and mental health, he turned to his family and faith for support. With encouragement from his mother in India and his British brother and friend, John Cotterill, Dr. Varghese decided to reclaim his dreams and chart a new course.
